Sitting atop the U.S. Capitol building is a statue from 1863 by sculptor Thomas Crawford titled Freedom Triumphant in War and Peace. The statue presents a woman as an allegory for freedom, referenced explicitly by Huhn in this work. Huhn places Freedom surrounded by advances in technology and cast away on an isolated rock, asking the viewer to grapple with the idea that when technology and society advance at a rapid pace we sometimes we forget to ask what the consequences are for those advancements. Often times, that price is freedom. Tim Huhn, however, is not one to leave us without hope. Just as Crawford’s sculpture says, Freedom is always triumphant; she raises her arm towards the powerful and divine light that breaks the darkness above her in preparation of The Last Stand.
